THE WEEKDAY WORD…
UPDATED: December 3, 2025

Advent Interruptions
As I pulled into church this morning, my trip was met with the (near) sudden disruption on 51st Street. The city has begun resurfacing the road, and the work is expected to continue through December 19. City crews have assured us that access to the church will remain open, including on Sunday mornings, though the noise and equipment may feel like an unexpected interruption to the weekly rhythm.

Advent has always begun in places of disruption. The Gospel of Luke tells the story of Mary and Joseph being uprooted by a government census, traveling an estimated ninety miles at an inconvenient moment in their lives.

That holy journey has been on my mind, especially as I have taken on a personal challenge to walk those same ninety miles during the Advent season - now down to about eighty-two. This practice has reminded me that even when paths are uneven and schedules are unsettled, grace often emerges through the very interruptions we try to avoid.

As the road outside our doors is made smoother, Advent invites a similar inner work. Road construction may be inconvenient, but it also offers a visible sign of renewal and preparation.

The season calls the community to watch for how the Holy One arrives not in perfect conditions, but in the middle of real life - dust, detours, and all.

Advent Book Study

Join us in the Fellowship Hall after the service at 10:45am as we continue our Advent Book Study, reading together The Case for Christmas by Lee Strobel. Strobel, a journalist, dives into the details of the Christmas Story to help us connect with the gift of Jesus. Your presence will be a gift. See you there!

Angel Tree

Thank you to those of you who have grabbed Angels to give gifts to families at Prine Elementary School. If you would like to participate, and haven’t yet, grab an ornament or two on Sunday morning. Each ornament has the name, gender, age and a wish or wishes of each child. Once you select your angel, purchase and wrap a gift (Suggested value: $20) and attach the angel ornament to the gift. Please return your wrapped gifts by December 14th. Thanks for wrapping up hope for our kids this Christmas.

Awakened to Grace

Last year, we learned along with the Florida Conference, as we dove into the Wesleyan Rooted series. The Florida Conference is building on that momentum with a new yearlong emphasis: Awakened to Grace. Individuals and congregations across the Florida Conference are invited into a new year of spiritual renewal!

This initiative focuses on cultivating daily habits of faith, nurturing vibrant worship, and strengthening the bonds that connect us as one body in Christ.

As part of the initiative, lay and clergy across the Florida Conference has created a year-long devotional. The first volume is available now and begins with our advent season, which started on Sunday, November 30.

The link to the website is: https://www.wesleyanrooted.org/daily-devotional.html . You can download a PDF version for free, or you can order a printed copy sent to your home.

In addition to the devotional, you can engage in a weekly podcast. You can check that out at the link here: https://open.spotify.com/show/5zN5RUad6rZUi89BDZoXfq?si=8c05d9aceed34db2
